Our History

2005

Year of foundation

-We established the SZEnergy Team at Széchenyi István University in Győr.
-We have completed our first prototype, a simple electric tricycle.

2008

The first big victory

-We competed in the Shell Eco-marathon Europe for the first time with our vehicle called SZEsocar.
-We won first place in the Solar Power Award category, earning our first international recognition.

2009

Record-breaking performance

-We built the SZEnergy Car, an improved solar-powered electric vehicle.
-We took first place in the Shell Eco-marathon Europe competition in Lausitz and set an energy efficiency record.

2010

Pioneering Urban Concept vehicle

-We presented our Urban Concept vehicle called SZEvolution, which focused on real-world transport usability.
-We won first place in the Shell Eco-marathon Europe competition and were the first team to finish a race with a positive energy balance.

2013

Transition to fully electric vehicles

-We unveiled SZElectricity, our first fully electric Urban Concept vehicle, which was equipped with a unique powertrain and telemetry system.
-We participated in the Shell Eco-marathon Europe competition in Rotterdam, where we finished in 7th place, but this laid the foundation for our future developments.

2019
Introduction to SZEmission

-We built SZEmission, which is powered by a high-efficiency PMSM motor and lithium-polymer battery.
-We competed with it in the Shell Eco-marathon in London, where we finished in 6th place, continuing our tradition of sustainable vehicle development.

From 2022

World records and competition successes

We came first for four consecutive years and broke the world record in the energy efficiency category at the Shell Eco-marathon competitions with performances of 284, 291, 309 and 327 km/kWh. We also achieved outstanding results in the self-driving category, coming in second place in 2022, then first place in 2023 and 2024, followed by fourth place in 2025.

Our Goal

In the SZEnergy team, we consider the development of students as our mission. Beyond the university classes, we provide professional experience and mentoring to all our team members to help their professional development. The SZEnergy team is an investment in the future for both companies and students, as many of our talented team members will later work for one of our partners and companies.

Our Race

The Shell Eco-marathon is an energy efficiency competition that has been held for more than 40 years. Students compete with their own designed and built race cars to see who can travel the longest distance per unit of energy. Teams can compete in three energy classes at the Shell Eco-marathon: pure electric, hydrogen, and internal combustion. Within these classes, they can enter the prototype and city car categories. Our team is participating in the international competition in the electric city car category.

Our Departments

Department of mechanical engineering
  • Construction design tasks
  • Structure optimization
  • Engineering project management
  • 3D printing
  • Mechanical assembly

In order to comply with the unconventional competition regulations, we design many unique components. These elements are placed in a simulation environment and then manufactured using additive technologies.

Department of electronics
    • Electronics systems development
    • Embedded system programming
    • Vehicle informatics systems development
    • Telemetry
    • Electronic circuit design

In our electronics department, we develop our vehicle’s own electronic system and designed printed circuits, for which we produce the hardware and software parts within the team.

Department of autonomous vehicles
    • Artificial intelligence
    • Robot Operating System
    • Mechatronics
    • Robotics, sensorics, signal processing
    • Control and planning algorithms, SLAM SLAM

In our self-driving vehicle development department, we deal with the development of artificial intelligence, where our team members work to build a self-driving car.

Department of Marketing & Management
    • Operative marketing tasks
    • Organisation of events
    • PR management
    • Sponsorship management
    • Creation of media content
    • Graphic design

The Marketing & Management department is responsible for team communication, marketing, and events. We manage social media platforms, develop and implement marketing strategies, and take care of sponsorship, PR, media content, and graphic materials.
